Giving Thanks for Our Heating & Cooling Systems

Nov 26, 2020 | Uncategorized

While many of us gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, many of us take this time to count our blessings and show some appreciation for things we might be taking for granted.

This year, 2020, has been a struggle for many people. Nonetheless, the old saying applies: It could always be worse. Knowing this, it’s helpful to focus on the good things in our lives. A great deal of us still have our freedom, our health, our loved ones, our safety, our homes and food to eat.

For those of us who still have our homes and still have heat to keep us comfortable and safe, we have our home heating systems, in large part, to thank. Throughout the most extreme cold weather, our furnaces work around-the-clock to keep us warm.

So, in honor of Thanksgiving today, we at Springfield Heating & Cooling review a few of the things our HVAC systems do for us year-round, along with a few of the things homeowners can do to show their appreciation.

Why we are grateful for our HVAC systems

Energy Efficiency

Regardless of who you ask in the HVAC business, it is well-known that when we take care of our HVAC systems, our HVAC systems take care of us in return. When it comes to efficiency, this care equates to savings in monthly heating and cooling costs. Because most newer systems have Energy Star Labels, energy efficiency can be optimized easily. Having said that, however, even with the Energy Star label, we still have to keep up on seasonal maintenance. HVAC system maintenance, also called tune-ups, are a must for all systems.

Comfort & Safety

Throughout the most extreme of Ohio’s weather conditions, our HVAC systems are what make our homes nice and comfortable, and safe. And yet in spite of this, far too many homeowners don’t give these systems a great deal of consideration, until their service goes out, whether these outages are from a loss of power or from some sort of component breaking down. It’s been our experience when this happens, after service and comfort is restored, it changes our perspectives. Often, when someone loses their system during a cold or hot spell, it brings about a new appreciation.

Clean Air to Breathe

One important role our HVAC systems perform is to help keep the indoor air we breathe clean, which is essential to overall health and well-being. Our home heating and cooling units keep our indoor air clean with our air filters. These air filters, when changed on schedule, are meant to remove dust, dirt, pet dander and other airborne pollutants from our home’s air supply. Because these airborne particles can cause allergies and breathing problems, having clean air filters is essential. And, for homeowners hoping to take this a step further and improve breathing conditions even more, we have a whole line of Indoor Air Quality products.

How We Can Show Our Appreciation

Our HVAC systems are like major home investments. Because these systems are expensive, intricate machines, it pays to show them our appreciation by taking care of them. Having said that, we are aware that HVAC systems can’t think and it’d be pointless to tell them “Thank You.” Nonetheless, they respond well when we give them a little attention and care. Showing your appreciation for your home heating and cooling systems will pay off as well. The most important step in doing this involves keeping up with preventative maintenance, or getting tune-ups prior to each season of usage. The next step is keeping your air filters fresh to allow for free airflow. Other ways to give thanks for your furnace and AC include:

  • Keeping a clear and open space of three feet around systems
  • Making sure you seal drafts and air leaks in the home
  • Keeping an eye out for leaks in loose ductwork
  • Understanding energy efficiency in your home
  • Making sure you have enough attic insulation
  • Having your vents and air ducts cleaned
  • Keeping the outside unit clean
  • Installing a smart thermostat
  • Keeping your home clean
  • Changing air filters often
  • Practice safety always!
